Indian Engineering Services is one of the 32 main civil services. It is an important career choice and offers attractive positions, career growth and remuneration. The service caters to the technical and managerial roles in the Indian Government.


Indian Engineering Services play an important role to manage activities in diverse areas. There task extends to cover construction, defence, inspection, manufacturing, public works, power, roads, supply, telecommunication etc. The nature of work of the Engineering Officers depends on the branch, service or the cadre to which they are selected. They can further be employed in any other government organisation or cadre.

Procedure to join Indian Engineering Services

Aspirants can apply for the Engineering Services Examination on the UPSC website on advertisement of vacancies. The basic requirement for the examination is graduation in Engineering (BE/B Tech) from a recognised university or equivalent. An M Sc Degree or its equivalent with Wireless Communications, Electronics, radio Physics or Radio Engineering as special subjects is also acceptable for certain posts/services. The candidates are required to fill in choices for various categories at the time of filling online application. An all India combined 4 stages competitive entrance examination is held to carry out recruitment to following services:

  • Civil Engineering
  • Mechanical Engineering
  • Electrical Engineering
  • Electronics
  • Telecommunication Engineering

The examination is called Engineering Services Examination (ESE) and consists of six papers.

The candidates who make it to the merit are then called for a personal interview to assess their suitability for the service.

The candidates on selection can seek recruitment with the various government departments based on their qualification and experience. The candidates on recruitment are placed as Assistant Executive Engineers (AEE) and depending on vacancies assigned to following Government Departments:-

Career Prospects

The Engineering career in Government service starts with the appointment as AEE on selection.  After 3 to 4 years they can attain the post of Executive Engineer equivalent to Under Secretary in Indian Government. Those with 20 years service are promoted to the post of Chief Engineer level -1 (Equivalent to Joint Secretary to Government of India (GOI) and can further rise to the post of Chairman, Director General or as Secretary To GOI.
