Electrical and Electronic Engineering

Electrical and Electronic Engineering covers the generation, storage and use of power.  The study of Electrical and Electronic Engineering can involve large amounts of power and large devices or small amounts of power and small devices. Electrical engineering is concerned more with power generation, storage and transmission and  Electronics engineering is focused on appliances and devices that use electricity and electricity applications that are used in signal processing or control systems.

Electrical and electronics engineering

Electronics or electronic engineering is an electrical engineering discipline which utilizes non-linear and active electrical components (such as semiconductor devices, especially transistors, diodes and integrated circuits) to design electronic circuits, devices, microprocessors, microcontrollers and other systems. The discipline typically also designs passive electrical components, usually based on printed circuit boards.  Electrical engineering is a field of engineering that generally deals with the study and application of electricity, electronics, and electromagnetism.

Electrical engineers design, develop, test, and supervise the manufacturing of electrical equipment, such as electric motors, radar and navigation systems, communications systems, or power generation equipment. Electrical engineers also design the electrical systems of automobiles and aircraft. Electronics engineers design and develop electronic equipment, such as broadcast and communications systems, from portable music players to global positioning systems (GPSs).   • Investigate complaints from customers or the public, evaluate problems, and recommend solutions
  • Work with project managers on production efforts to ensure that projects are completed satisfactorily, on time, and within budget

Electronics engineers typically do the following:

  • Design electronic components, software, products, or systems for commercial, industrial, medical, military, or scientific applications
  • Analyze customer needs and determine the requirements, capacity, and cost for developing an electrical system plan
  • Develop maintenance and testing procedures for electronic components and equipment
  • Evaluate systems and recommend design modifications or equipment repair
  • Inspect electronic equipment, instruments, and systems to make sure that they meet safety standards and applicable regulations
  • Plan and develop applications and modifications for electronic properties used in parts and systems in order to improve technical performance

Electronics engineers who work for the government research, develop, and evaluate electronic devices used in a variety of areas, such as aviation, computing, transportation, and manufacturing. They work on electronic devices and systems, including satellites, flight systems, radar and sonar systems, and communications systems.

The work of electrical engineers and electronics engineers is often similar. Both use engineering and design software and equipment to do engineering tasks. Both types of engineers also work with other engineers to discuss existing products and possibilities for engineering projects. Education Information

Undergraduate programs teach students about electrical theory, the use of common equipment, electrical schematics and electrical applications. Applications can involve computing, energy storage, communications or entertainment.

Students in graduate programs generally branch off into a specific area of electronics or electrical engineering. Students may earn a master’s or doctorate to pursue supervisory, executive or teaching positions, but most entry-level positions in the field only require a bachelor’s degree. Engineers may seek licensure to become a professional engineer (PE) through work experience and passing requisite exams. Most 4-year electronic or electrical engineering programs prepare students to work as electronics or electrical engineers. It is imperative that electrical and electronic engineers continue their education. Those who do not keep abreast of latest advances in technology are at the risk of either loosing jobs or loosing good promotion opportunities.
