Manufacturing Engineering is a discipline of engineering dealing with various manufacturing sciences and practices including the research, design and development of systems, processes, machines, tools, and equipment. In brief, it is concerned with understanding, analyzing and improving complex industrial, manufacturing and infrastructure systems. Manufacturing Engineering is based on core mechanical engineering skills, adding important elements from mechanics, commerce, economics and business management. It is the most flexible and marketable of all the engineering disciplines.  In fact, many engineers that originally study other engineering disciplines end up practicing as Manufacturing Engineers.

Manufacturing engineers design, direct and coordinate the manufacturing process of products at every level. A manufacturing engineer is involved in the manufacturing process from the start, beginning with planning process of a product to finalizing and packing the completed goods, . Manufacturing engineers create and implement processes to manufacture products in a low-cost and efficient way. Manufacturing engineering professionals apply scientific, mathematics and engineering principles during production to meet several demands. Some of the demands that manufacturing engineers must meet include increasing production turnaround times and improving the flow of production.

Manufacturing Engineers:

  • design a product,
  • select the best technologies and processes for manufacturing it,
  • plan and design the factory that will produce the product, and
  • oversee the running, management, maintenance and improvement of the factory.

Manufacturing Engineers also get involved in supply chain management, logistics and distribution, quality management as well as environmental and life-cycle management. This engineering field has many specialized areas for students to consider. A desirous manufacturing engineering student should be a detail oriented person, a good team member with good analytical skills. The essential key skills are creativity, problem-solving, mathematical aptitude, communication. Education Information

A bachelor’s degree in engineering is a requirement for many entry-level engineering positions. The length of study for such a degree is usually four to five years followed by five more years of professional practice to qualify as a professional engineer. Working as a manufacturing engineering technologist involves a more applications-oriented qualification path. Academic degrees for manufacturing engineers are usually the Bachelor of Engineering, [B.E] or [B.Eng], and the Bachelor of Science, [B.S] or [B Sc]. For manufacturing technologists the required degrees are Bachelor of Technology [B.TECH] or Bachelor of Applied Science [BA.Sc] in Manufacturing, depending upon the university. Master’s degrees in engineering manufacturing include Master of Engineering [M.E] or [M.Eng] in Manufacturing, Master of Science [M.Sc] in Manufacturing Management, Master of Science [M.Sc] in Industrial and Production Management, and Master of Science [M.Sc] as well as Master of Engineering [M.E] in Design, which is a subdiscipline of manufacturing. Doctoral [Ph.D] or [D.Eng] level courses in manufacturing are also available depending on the university.

Some of the top employers for those in this field included manufacturers of aerospace parts, motor vehicle parts, navigational or measuring instruments and electromedical instruments. The average pay for a Manufacturing Engineer is Rs 4 lakh plus per year. Most people move on to other jobs if they have more than 20 years experience in this career. The skills that increase pay for this job the most are Manufacturing Process Engineering and Project Management.
